Nothing like the classics... HP LaserJet 4M Plus, built July 1995, with JetDirect J2252B networking card. Still works perfectly, networked on Windows 7, too.
Also...

My university still had a bank of old dot matrix printers from the ‘70s, bolted into the floor of one of the libraries ca. 2008. They were the only ones you weren’t charged to use, unlimited free printing and somehow networked successfully to all the decades newer computers. I don’t know exactly when it happened, but durability of consumer electronics and appliances took a serious nose dive quite recently.

I need to grab an old HP LaserJet. No need for one. But they’re so cool... we had a 4L and a 6L when I was younger.
Can you print something for us?

I liked the LaserJet IIIsi. Slow, but built like a tank with almost no regular maintenance required.

An office I worked at about 8 years ago still had a telex machine running an Okidata ML320 dot matrix printer, complete with paper on a large roll instead of individual sheets. I think you can still buy those things new; there will probably always be a need to print multi-part forms, and an impact printer is the only way to do that.

That sounds interesting. And yes, you can in fact get the ML320 new yet, on
Amazon
even!

What the f#ck does that mean?

Sounds like a unique setup.
Having worked with plenty of newer consumer printers over the last few years, I can honestly say that I would try to avoid buying a new consumer printer at all costs. They make good electronic subjects to torture while scrapping, however...

This is the right answer. These are amazing.

Needs paper. Letter size.

I got this one for free about a year ago thanks to a friend’s connection at a university. It has ~ 126,000 pages on it and no maintenance history. I haven’t had much time to dig into it, but it does work.
It does have some print quality issues; probably could use a new toner cartridge to start. At least the toner cartridge for these can be found for only $20!

PC LOAD LETTER! My high school had one of those in a room full of IBM ps/2 all in ones running things like WordPerfect and Borland Turbo Pascal. It was a great printer and I remember the famous PC LOAD LETTER which I’ve seen on lists of famously badly worded error messages. (PC= paper cartridge, ie out of paper)
